Why do 80% of projects go wrong?
- The objective is not clear
- Content is ready at the last minute
- The client constantly changes requirements
- Technology is chosen based on trends, not needs
- Testing is skipped
The correct 7-stage process
Stage 1: Strategy (1 week) - Who is the target audience? - What is the primary goal of the site? (sales? leads? brand?) - Who are the competitors? - What are they doing well/poorly? - KPIs we will measure
Outcome: A 2–3 page brief.
Stage 2: Content (2 weeks) - Content structure (sitemap) - Messaging and CTA for each page - Copywriting - Gathering images and video - SEO keyword research
Rule: Content is completed before design. Design serves the content.
Stage 3: Wireframing and Prototyping (1 week) - Black and white schematics of each page layout - Defining the user journey - Client approval before design begins
Stage 4: Design (2 weeks) - Brand identity (colours, fonts, icons) - Hi-fi design in Figma - Mobile, tablet, and desktop versions - Pixel-perfect client approval
Stage 5: Development (3–6 weeks) - HTML/CSS/JS or CMS (WordPress, custom) - Responsive testing - Feature development (forms, search, e-commerce) - Schema markup and SEO
Stage 6: Testing (1 week) - Cross-browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) - Mobile testing on real devices - PageSpeed Insights - Lighthouse audit - Form testing - 404 page, sitemap, robots.txt
Stage 7: Launch and Monitoring (1 week) - DNS reconfiguration - 301 redirects from old URLs - Google Analytics 4, Search Console - Monitoring during the first 2 weeks
Choosing the Technology
| Technology | Best for | Advantage | Disadvantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Blogs, presentation sites | Flexible, many plugins | Requires maintenance |
| Shopify | E-commerce | All-in-one | Vendor lock-in |
| Webflow | Design-focused | Visual building | More expensive |
| Custom React | Large projects | Scalable | Costlier development |
| Squarespace | Simple sites | Fast | Limited |
Is the budget realistic?
In Estonia 2026: - Presentation site (5–10 pages): €1,500–€4,000 - E-commerce: €3,000–€8,000 - Custom solution: €8,000–€25,000 - Enterprise: €25,000+
If you hear "€500 for a full website", you are getting a template – not a project.
What should be in the contract?
- Clear scope (number of pages, specific functionality)
- Stages and payments
- Change management (how many are included in the price?)
- Transfer of source code ownership
- Warranty (60–90 days)
- Post-launch maintenance
Summary
A good website is not born in a rush. It is an 8–14 week project. If someone promises it in 1 week – it is a template, not a solution tailored for you.
