Fixing an old website
Your site is letting you down? We fix it or build a new one. We review it, tell you honestly which is cheaper, and do the work — speed, security, mobile, forms and e-mail.

Repair or rebuild
The first step is a written assessment: when patching pays off and when a new site is cheaper.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
Images, caching, redundant plugins and code weight — the site loads fast on mobile too.
Hacked site cleanup
Malware removal, credential rotation, a firewall and monitoring so it does not happen again.
Mobile and broken features
Layout, menu, forms, search, filters and payment flows brought back to working order.
Hosting, DNS and e-mail
SPF, DKIM and DMARC sorted so contact form enquiries actually reach your inbox.
A new site with a warranty
If we build a new one, it comes with a 3-month warranty and 3 months of free maintenance.
How it runs
Review and assessment
We check the platform, plugins, server, security and traffic. You get a written assessment with a recommendation.
Backup and staging
We take a full backup and a staging copy. Nothing is tested on the live site.
Repairs or rebuild
We carry out the agreed work in priority order and keep you posted at every step.
Testing and launch
We verify forms, mobile, speed and redirects, then move the changes into production.
Handover and ongoing care
You get a summary of the work and the credentials. If you wish, we continue with monthly maintenance.
An old website is not automatically a bad website. Usually it is simply a site nobody has touched for a couple of years: the platform is outdated, plugins are unmaintained, the design predates the mobile boom and the contact form sends mail somewhere nobody reads. Below we describe exactly how we review a site like that, what a repair covers, and when it is more honest to say that a rebuild will cost less than patching the old one.
Who this service is for
If you recognise at least one of the situations below, this page is for you. Most clients arrive with two or three symptoms at once — they tend to travel together, because they share one root cause: nobody has maintained the site systematically.
- The site loads slowly and the visitor leaves before the content even appears.
- The mobile layout is broken: text overflows, buttons are not tappable, the menu does not open.
- The design is dated and no longer supports what the company actually sells today.
- The site is hacked or infected — the browser or Google shows a warning.
- Plugins and themes are abandoned: the developer no longer ships updates or security fixes.
- No enquiries arrive — the form is broken, mail lands in spam, or there are no CTAs at all.
- The previous developer has disappeared and nobody knows where the logins, domain or backups live.
First step: repair or rebuild
We never start work before reviewing the site. We look at the platform and its version, the state of the theme and plugins, the server and PHP version, the database size, the volume of content, current traffic and rankings, and whether the site is backed up safely at all. On that basis we tell you clearly which of the two routes makes sense.
A repair is usually the right call when the structure and content are sound and the problem is technical: speed, security, broken functionality or the mobile view. A rebuild is cheaper when the foundation itself is finished — an abandoned theme where every change breaks something else, or a platform that no longer receives security updates. In that case a repair burns more hours than a new build and the result is still temporary.
You get the assessment in writing, with the reasoning. If we recommend a rebuild, we also show what carries over: content, images, the domain, e-mail and search rankings all move with you. Read more about building a new site on the website development page.
What a repair covers
Repair work always starts with a full backup and a staging environment. Nothing is tested on the live site. Every change is made separately, tested and only then moved to production — so any step can be rolled back if needed.
- Speed: image optimisation, caching, removing redundant plugins, improving Core Web Vitals.
- Security: malware removal, cleaning infected files, rotating passwords and access, a firewall and continuous monitoring.
- Broken features: forms, search, filters, payment flows, bookings and anything else that has stopped working.
- The mobile view: layout, tap targets, font sizes and the menu, so the site works on a 390 px screen too.
- Forms and e-mail deliverability: SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up so enquiries do not vanish into spam.
- Hosting, DNS and the domain: moving to proper hosting, certificates, redirects and cleaning up stale records.
- Content migration: existing content, images and files move across without breaking links or rankings.
What a rebuild covers
If we decide on a rebuild together, we do not start from nothing. We map the existing structure, keep working URLs or set up correct redirects, migrate the content and build a modern, fast, mobile-first site. The design follows what you actually sell, not a template.
Every website we build comes with a 3-month warranty and 3 months of free maintenance. Bugs are fixed at no cost and for the first three months we keep the site running, updated and backed up at no extra charge. After that you can continue with our website maintenance service or manage the site yourself.
What you end up with
At the end you get a site that loads fast, works on a phone, is secure and has a working path to contact you. You also get a document listing what was done, where the credentials live and what would be sensible to do next. The credentials belong to you — we do not hold your domain or hosting hostage.
If the goal is visibility and traffic on top of a working site, we usually continue with website optimisation and security. A repaired site is a good foundation, but it only brings customers once people can find it.
A good fit if
- You have a site, but it is slow, broken or outdated.
- You do not know whether to repair or rebuild and want an honest assessment.
- The previous developer has vanished and you need someone to take over.
Not a fit if
- You do not have a site yet — start with a new build instead.
- You want a one-off cheap patch without addressing the causes.
Frequently asked questions
How do you decide between repairing and rebuilding?
We look at the platform and its version, the state of the theme and plugins, the server, the database, the volume of content and current rankings. If the foundation is sound and the problem is technical, we repair. If every change breaks something else or the platform no longer gets security updates, a rebuild costs less. You get the assessment in writing with the reasoning.
How much does fixing an old website cost?
The price depends on what is broken and how large the site is. That is why we do not quote a number here — we review the site and give a concrete offer with a list of work items. Request a quote and you get a clear scope before anything starts.
Do rankings and content survive the work?
Yes. Content, images and files are migrated, and URLs are either kept or given correct redirects. That way you do not lose existing rankings or inbound links. It is one of the reasons we never simply delete an old site.
My site is hacked. How fast can it be cleaned?
We start with a backup and identifying infected files, then clean, rotate every credential and add a firewall plus monitoring. The exact time depends on the extent of the infection and hosting access, but we treat it as a priority, because every day with a warning costs traffic.
The previous developer disappeared and I have no logins. Can you help?
We can. We help recover domain, hosting and site access, or move it into the right hands. At the end of that work all credentials belong to you and are documented in one place.
Does a new site come with a warranty?
Yes. Every website we build comes with a 3-month warranty and 3 months of free maintenance. During that time we fix bugs at no cost and keep the site updated and backed up.
