Mobile-first Design: What It Is and Why It Matters

70% of Estonian web traffic is mobile. If your site isn't mobile-first, you're losing the majority of your visitors. Learn the core principles here.

    What is mobile-first?

Mobile-first design means that a website is designed first for mobile screens and only then adapted for larger displays. This is the opposite of the legacy "responsive" approach, where desktop was the primary focus and mobile was "fixed up" afterwards.

    Why is it important?

    • 70% of Estonian web traffic comes from mobile devices
    • Google indexes pages mobile-first, meaning it prioritises the mobile version for ranking
    • There is no room for clutter on mobile – this forces the designer to focus on what matters

    Core rules of mobile-first

    1. Prioritise content On mobile, a user sees one screen at a time. What is the most important element? That must come first.

    2. Tap-targets at least 44x44px Recommended by Apple and Google. Smaller buttons cause accidental taps and user frustration.

    3. Single column over multiple Horizontal space is at a premium on mobile. Stack content vertically.

    4. Avoid hover effects There is no hover state on mobile. All information must be immediately visible or accessible via a single tap.

    5. Optimise images Mobile equals slower 4G/5G connections and data costs. Use WebP/AVIF formats.

    6. Simplify forms Every field on mobile risks losing a user. Only ask for the bare essentials.

    Tools for testing

    • Chrome DevTools (F12 → Device Toolbar)
    • Google PageSpeed Insights (separate mobile score)
    • BrowserStack (testing on real devices)

    Summary

If your site works well on mobile, it will work on desktop too. The reverse is not true.
