GDPR + WCAG: How to Manage a Compliance Audit in 2026

Data protection and accessibility compliance often go hand in hand. Learn how to conduct a dual GDPR and WCAG audit efficiently to save time and costs.

    Why conduct them together?

GDPR (in effect since 2018) and WCAG/EAA (in full force from 28.06.2025) are the two most significant compliance requirements for websites in Estonia. Both:

    • Require regular audits
    • Affect the same components (forms, cookie notices, footers)
    • Carry fines for non-compliance
    • Positively impact SEO (Google W3C support)

Auditing them separately costs twice as much. Doing them together allows for savings of 30-40%.

    Areas of Overlap

    1. Cookie Notice - **GDPR:** Consent, granularity, as easy to withdraw as to give. - **WCAG:** Keyboard accessible, screen reader compatible, sufficient contrast, focus must not be trapped under the banner.

    2. Privacy Policy - **GDPR:** Article 13 information requirements. - **WCAG:** Heading hierarchy, contrast, plain language ([WCAG 3.1.5](https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/reading-level.html)).

    3. Contact Form - **GDPR:** Only necessary fields, consent checkbox must be optional. - **WCAG:** Labels, error messages, keyboard support.

    4. Account Creation and Login - **GDPR:** Data minimisation, right to erasure. - **WCAG:** CAPTCHA must not require cognitive tests (new 2.2 rule), passkeys.

    5. Footer - **GDPR:** Links to Privacy Policy, Cookie Settings. - **WCAG:** Accessibility Statement (link).
