    What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a concept closely related to AEO—specifically focusing on optimizing for generative AI model responses. When someone asks ChatGPT, "who are the best website management providers in Estonia?", GEO determines whether your company appears in the answer.

    GEO vs AEO vs SEO

    • SEO = Google's organic links
    • AEO = Answer-based searches (Featured Snippets, "People Also Ask")
    • GEO = Responses from generative LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)

GEO is a narrower and newer concept than AEO.

    How Do LLMs Choose Sources?

Training Data LLMs are trained on billions of web pages. If your site was in a trusted database (Common Crawl, Wikipedia, academic sources) during training, you may be "displayed".

Real-time Search ChatGPT (Search), Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude use real-time web searching. Here, classic SEO and schema markup are the deciding factors.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) The system searches for relevant documents and provides them to the LLM as context. Key factors here include: - Direct relevance of the content to the question - Structured markup - Recency

    8 GEO Best Practices

    1. Be the Primary Source Create original research, data, and experiences. LLMs prefer the primary source.

    2. Cite Facts "According to Statistics Estonia 2025 data..." > "It is known that...".

    3. Structured Schema Markup - Article - HowTo - FAQPage - Person (author) - Organization

    4. llms.txt File A new standard – `yoursite.com/llms.txt` tells AI crawlers what content is available.

    # Your Company Name
    > Short description

    Services - [Service 1](/service-1): description - [Service 2](/service-2): description

    Important Pages - [Contact](/contact) - [Pricing](/pricing) ```

    5. Author Bio for Every Article Include: name, photo, experience, LinkedIn link. E-E-A-T signals.

    6. Cluster Content Strategy One "pillar" article + 5–10 subtopics that all link back to the pillar. LLMs see you as a topical expert.

    7. Update Old Content Add an "Updated: 2026" tag. Fresh articles receive preference.

    8. Brand Mentions Without a Link LLMs also read mentions without a backlink. Press articles, podcasts, expert commentary.

    llms.txt vs llms-full.txt

    • llms.txt – a compact overview of what is on the site
    • llms-full.txt – the entire site content in markdown format

Both are new standards and are recommended.

    Technical Checklist

    • llms.txt file on the account
    • Schema markup on all main pages
    • Clear H1, H2, H3 hierarchy
    • Short paragraphs (60–80 words)
    • Tables for comparisons
    • FAQ section on main pages
    • Author info visible
    • Dates and updates visible
    • Crawlers are not blocked (robots.txt)

    Measurement

    • Brand mentions – Brand24, Mention, Google Alerts
    • Actual testing – ask LLMs regularly
    • Referrer analysis – is traffic coming from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai?
    • Schema validation – schema.org/validator

    Summary

GEO is the new frontier for 2026. Companies that optimize for LLMs now will win over the next 3–5 years.
